A few months ago, Instagram added a feature called Channels. To put it simply, a channel is like a group chat, but only the admin can post in it. You can only follow and post your emoji reaction to messages. An even simpler way to look at messages is to imagine a social media page where you get all the updates.
From your favorite soccer team to an anime community, a page provides you with information about your area of interest. Just the same way, a Channel on WhatsApp will let someone broadcast information to all followers. These Channels will appear in the same place where you see WhatsApp status stories.
If you want to discover channels that suit your interest, there will also be a search feature to help you find relevant channels. “We’re building a searchable directory where you can find your hobbies, sports teams, updates from local officials, and more,” says WhatsApp.
As a measure of privacy, no Channel member will be able to see your profile picture, name, or phone number. Even the Channel creator won’t be able to see your phone number. The core idea is to appear in a Channel, find the latest saucy information, and fuck right off, without anyone ever knowing.
WhatsApp will let anyone create Channels and will also integrate its payment system in there down the road. After all, who doesn't love ad marketing money?
Channels will also block screenshots, and you can’t forward messages posted in a channel.
Just like social media pages, you will also be able to join channels with a URL link, email, or any other online media.
Here's the most crucial part. Unlike your WhatsApp chat, what gets posted in a Channel is not end-to-end encrypted. So, be careful about the channel you join, unless the FBI comes knocking at your door. For now, WhatsApp is testing Channels in Colombia and Singapore, but more countries will be added to the list soon.
