Samsung has just laucnhed its latest ultra-luxe foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It looks the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but there's one crucial difference this time. It can finally close. Like, properly close shut. No gap in between the two halves of the screen on this one.

One crucial pain point with all Samsung foldable phones so far has been the wedge-shaped gap between each half. This allowed dust, liquid, and other solid particles to settle in the gap. Given the notoriously fragile nature of foldable phones, it was an open invitation for damage, especially to that inner flexible screen.

Unfortunately, the repair costs were high enough to raise the blood pressure and condemn you to eternal financial depression. It also doesn't help that in an event of physical damage – either to the hinge, or the screen – the entire hinge + display assembly needs to be replaced.

Hopefully, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will fare better with the new Flex Hinge hardware. A Samsung spokesperson told me that the number of folds it can survive stays the same at 200,000 folding/unfolding cycles, though. Thankfully, Samsung assures that the hinge resistance has gone up and that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 can handle bumps and falls with more gutso.
